Last week He-Man and I had a get-away celebratory few days in Morro Bay and surrounding area for our 45th wedding anniversary.

We had a nice room with a balcony view of the famous Morro Rock.

This is the first look of Morro Rock from our balcony after checking-in.

We visited a lighthouse or light station as they’re now called, hiked in State and County parks, ate fresh seafood every evening, and of course I birded.

We we lucky and had some beautiful sunsets. Here’s our first one.

Fun Facts:

Morro Rock, a State Historic Landmark, was formed about 23 million years ago from the plugs of long-extinct volcanoes. Morro Rock was an important navigational aid for mariners for over 300 years because the rock is approximately 576 feet tall which made it the most visible in a chain of 9 peaks. Portuguese explorer, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo named the rock “El Morro” in 1542. In Spanish “Morro” means crown shaped hill. Morro Rock, sometimes called the “Gibraltar of the Pacific,” is the last peak of the Nine Sisters, which extend from San Luis Obispo to Morro Bay.

The rock itself was mined on and off until 1963. Morro Rock provided material for the break water of Morro Bay and Port San Luis Harbor. In 1966, a bill was introduced which transferred the full title to the State of California. Later the San Luis Obispo County Historical Society and the City of Morro Bay succeeded in getting the Morro Rock declared as California Registered Historical Landmark #821. Morro Rock also became State Landmark #801 in 1968. The rock has since been designated a bird sanctuary for the peregrine falcon and other bird species.“

Friday’s Feathered Friends- Rock Wren in Red Rocks Park

Hi! He-Man and I are home from a trip to the Denver, CO area for a wedding and vacation.

I haven’t uploaded too many images from the week yet, but here’s a little Rock Wren I spied while hiking in Red Rocks Park on the Red Rocks Trail. It was hunting for breakfast in a fenced off maintenance area just off the trail.

Our last night there we had a lovely sunset …the first one all week actually. I grabbed a quick shot through our hotel room’s window.

Then I went down stairs to make an image of the courtyard with an evening blue sky and clouds behind it. I hoped for more sunset color but, it was too cloudy.

We had a great time, and visited several beautiful parks which I’ll be sharing images of soon.

He-Man and I have been traveling between our children’s homes in April which has been fun, and wonderful. Our latest trip we went to see our son in SoCal for several days. One evening we went down to the pier hoping for a good sunset. It wasn’t bad, but the company was perfect.

We dined out in restaurants and it was grand! Really. I missed dining out. We ate in places that we don’t have at home like Thai, Greek, and fresh Seafood. I was bad and didn’t take any images of the food at these places. Sorry!

We took after dinner hikes up in the canyon near Big Baby Boy’s and The Dark Haired Beauty’s place, and it was lovely. Spring wildflowers were in bloom.

Here’s a Sweet Pea of some sort- Sandy Beach or Chaparral? They are the largest flowers in the Pea family I’ve ever seen before.

I only took my Fuji X-T3 and my newest lens for it the Fujinon XF 16-80mm.

I’ve had the lens a couple of months now and really haven’t used it all that much, but this trip it got some love. I think it did a good job and its small, as well as light weight so it made a great travel kit.

There’s a nesting Red-tailed Hawk in a tree at the Golf Course where we live. I am hoping to get some good images of the chick and the parents bringing in food. So far I’ve not been lucky.

Hello 2021!

He-Man and I spent the last afternoon of 2020 snowshoeing at a lake nearby to stretch our legs.

There were a few other people enjoying the sunny day. Some decided to ice fish on lake. They were just drilling out their hole here when we went by.

The scenery was just lovely. The sky was so blue with nice clouds, and there was not much of a breeze so we warmed up quickly while snowshoeing.

It felt great to get out and stretch our legs. We had a very quiet evening in for New Year’s Eve. I didn’t make it to midnight, and I slept soundly as there were no fireworks, cannon or guns being fired in our neighborhood. We didn’t know what to expect since we’d spent our first New Year’s Eve in our new house not in our house at all, but in London. So, we’ve discovered it was quite different from our old neighborhood where there would have been fireworks, cannon, and shouting, and whooping it up. Did you make it to midnight? Were there noisemakers and celebrations in your neighborhood?

The 1st found me being lazy. I made our traditional good luck dinner, but I did try to recreate the Good Luck meal we had on New Year’s Day in London at Herman ze German’s by adding Brats and German beer to our menu. I hope I ate enough to have good luck all through the year.

The day closed with some lovely color after the sun went down. It was a lovely day and I hope it sets the tone for the upcoming year.

While out hiking I’m enjoying the sound of rushing water as rushes down the canyons and mountains. The rivers, creeks, and streams are all flowing fast and loud.

Here’s a little stream I crossed recently while on a hike.

We went to see our Grandsons, Baby Girl, and The Handsome Surveyor for the holiday week-end. It was wonderful seeing them and hanging out on the lake.  Baby Girl wakeboarded, He-Man and I spent a lot of time with our Littlest and #1 Grandson, and I learned how to drive a waverunner. That was fun! I can’t wait to do that again.  I’m working up my nerve to try the knee board. 😀

I got an invitation to try out the new editor before they make the change permanent so I clicked over and started writing this post. I didn’t like the font that came up when I started typing the title and couldn’t figure out how to change it. Where’s the font choices?

Then I started poking around to see if I could still schedule the post for a future date…couldn’t find that either! Not a good start wordpress!  Then I started hunting for the way to go back to the classic editor and thankfully I found that and went right back here!  Geez!  Right now I don’t think the new editor and I are going to get along if I can’t find what I use the most from the get-go! Sigh! 😔

Thursday Doors: Firehouse Nº12

I’ve admired this firehouse/station ever since we started looking to buy a house in Carson Valley back in 2016, and I’ve been planning to photograph it with some clouds and color since moving into our house this Spring.  Finally, we got some clouds that looked like they might hold some color so I grabbed my camera, tripod, keys, wallet, and a spare battery and headed to the firehouse.  There was some color!

This is probably the firehouse that would service my neighborhood, but other than it being one of the nicest looking fire stations I’ve seen I know nothing about it.

Whatever Weds. Sunset over the Vineyard

I got home Thursday night and saw a friend was having a Meet Up to photograph the Wild Mustard that is in bloom here now, and the sunset. I signed up to go straight-away. I’ve been missing my camera time quite a lot.

It was so good to get out with friends old and new to converse, hear the birds, see the fields of wild mustard, and a lovely sunset.

This was our last stop for the evening;  in a vineyard looking west over the wild mustard and vines as the sunset cast its last light on the Santa Cruz mountains and valley below.
