I participated in Scott Kelby’s WorldWide Photowalk last October, and the walk I did was at Fort Point in San Francisco, CA. This is an image from just outside the fort.

After the rain we had this week I thought I’d take a drive out to Uvas Canyon to photograph the creeks, and falls.
Here’s just one of many images I made this morning along Swanson Creek.

P52 1/52 Yosemite Chapel Doors

I am doing another Project 52 this year. I thought about doing one or more genres which I love to photograph, but in the end thought I’d do something different this year; Doors.  I thoroughly enjoyed Dan’s doors over at

No Facilities blog this past year brought to us by Norm over at:

https://miscellaneousmusingsofamiddleagedmind.wordpress.com

I like doors and windows and I hope to come up with 52 or more doors that are interesting.

My first door for the year are the doors of Yosemite Valley Chapel. I love this Chapel. It’s so pretty in all seasons.

I went to Yosemite on January 1st to shoot the valley in it’s new Winter Coat of snow with 2 dear friends. This was our “not-so annual” trip. We try every year to start the year with a photography trip, but it hasn’t been consistent since we all have families, a life, and other interests. This year 3 of our little group were able to make the trip to Yosemite. Our 4th we will forgive for missing…one day! He was in the Galapagos Islands photographing all the sights, and some wildlife. I confess I’m a little jealous! Okay, back to the subject at hand. The Chapel.

I had the pleasure of attending a friends wedding here in the early 80’s. It was lovely!

Yosemite Chapel

My favorite time to photograph this chapel in the winter when there is snow.  It has the distinguished honor of being the oldest building in public use in Yosemite Valley. It was built in 1879 under the auspices of the Yosemite Union Chapel Association. Their stated purpose was:
“To erect an undenominational house of worship in the Yosemite Valley”. ~Yosemite Valley Chapel.org

“Mr. Charles Geddes, a leading architect of San Francisco, made and presented the plans. Mr. E. Thomson, also of San Francisco, erected the building at a cost of between three and four thousand dollars. It will seat an audience of about two hundred and fifty. Mr. H. D. Bacon of Oakland donated the bell. When its first notes rang out on the evening of dedication, it was the first sound of “the church-going bell” ever heard in Yosemite.” [“In the Heart of the Sierras” by James M. Hutchings (1888)]

My interior images must be on film because I can’t find them in my digital archives. I’ll have to stop by the chapel on my next visit to photograph it again in digital since it’s been a long time since I was last inside. Who knows when I’ll find the negatives, or scan them since they’re boxed up in the garage, and I’m moving ever so slowly through the boxes in the garage.

For more information about the Chapel please visit http://www.yosemitevalleychapel.org/history.htm

Monochrome Madness 2 39/52-Half Dome

Copyright ©2016 Deborah M. Zajac.  ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

I spent New Year’s Day in Yosemite National Park with 2 good friends. It’s a tradition of ours to get together for the New Year and photograph something good. There’s snow in Yosemite so we went there for the day.

Yosemite is magical in the Winter.

I made this image standing on Sentinel Bridge looking at Half Dome and the Merced River.

Top 10 2015 Images

Copyright 2015-2016 Deborah M. Zajac. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

Last week I shared with you the Top 10 Images that received the most  views over on my flickr site today I’m going to share with you My Personal favorite images from 2015. Most of these I posted on the blog, so you’ll probably recognize them or feel a sense of Deja-vu. 🙂

I selected these images based on emotions, technical merit, or because I met a personal goal. I got my picks  down to 36 then spent a couple of days whittling those down to just 10. It’s so hard! I have an emotional attachment to all of them. 🙂

Without further ado…My Personal Top 10 Images of 2015:

1)Running in Rain Puddles.  He’s just awesome, and brings me so much joy. I love being a Grandma!!

Running in Puddles

2) Milky Way over Mt Shasta- This was an Epic night spent with Dear Friends. I hope we are able to get together to shoot here again this year.Milky Way over Mount Shasta CA, USA

3) Total Lunar Eclipse over the Palace of Fine Arts San Francisco- This was another epic night. There was weeks of planning, chasing the Moon across town from one location to this one, working the camera to get the shots all the while hoping it would all come together in post production.  It’s pretty great when it does. Totality-Lunar Eclipse over The Palace of Fine Arts San Francisc

4) Cooper’s Hawk- I think.  There are a few  images in this selection that I haven’t shared before. More times than I care to admit I find I lack the confidence that a certain image I love will be well received, or what happens to me quite a lot is that I’m not crazy about the images when I first upload them after a shoot so, I let them marinate awhile. When I return to them months or years later I find I like them a whole lot more.

This Hawk in the reeds in Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge is an image I really like, but thought it might be too pedestrian to post back in January 2015 when I photographed it.  I love its face, the clarity of the eye, the natural environment, and the fact that I was able to make the image before it flew away.

5) Northern Flicker-Male – Another image never shown before today. This bird has been a nemesis of mine for years! They too are flighty.

I’d read reports of him being spotted in a neighborhood not from me in Jan/Feb. 2015, so one day a friend and I went looking for him. We found him deep in the shadows of this tree.  Once I got it uploaded and did some post production work to open up the shadows I was happy with the image, and feel like I can say it’s not my nemesis anymore.  They’re such beautiful birds.

6) Salsify macro- This was an image I photographed for my Project 52/2015 using my LensBaby Composer Pro wit the macro adapters. I love my LensBaby System and that creamy background. Salsify

7) Still-life “Why fit in when you were born to stand out.” Dr. Seuss

This one makes the cut because I got the lighting, and composition that I wanted to make right.

8) Orange Crowned Warbler.   I haven’t seen this little bird too often and photographing them is so hard; they’re small, and are so fidgety you have to be quick. This particular morning I set up my rig by a seep that was drawing in birds from the area for a drink.  Patience when birding is essential. It paid off this morning. I waited 30 minutes or so for this bird to come to the seep. This is the best image I’ve made of this species.

9) Great Egret-  Another bird image I’ve never before shared.  I love the colors, and how clear its eye is.

10)Sunrise cresting San Francisco Skyline from Kirby Cove. It was worth the mile hike back up for this image. Being there was awesome.

These are my favorites from 2015.  Thank you for being so supportive, and letting me share my images with you. I look forward to seeing your images, reading your poems, thoughts, and seeing the places you travel from  my arm-chair this year.

Happy and Healthy 2016 Everyone!

Annual Good Luck Dinner

I adopted He-Man’s family traditional New Years Day Good Luck Dinner in our 1st year of marriage. He had me get the recipe from his Mom.

Hot Dogs, Polish Sausage, and Saurkraut. Since we married amost 35 years ago I’ve made this on New Years Day except one. That year we were in Mexico and had their traditional eat 12 grapes in one minute before all the 12 chimes finished at midnight. I did not finish. That was hard! The grapes had seeds!

Tomorrow I am getting up at 4am and going to Yosemite with Dear Friends for our almost annual New Years trip so I have our New Years Good Luck Dinner cooking on low in the crockpot tonight. I will be having a hot dog and Saurkraut for breakfast before I leave at O’Dark Thirty. I can’t imagine starting a new year without  this meal now.

What do you eat on New Years Day?
