Thursday Doors- Jensen Mansion

This week I’m sharing a house with a pretty door that I’ve wanted to photograph for ages. While shopping in downtown Gardnerville, NV a few weeks back I finally turned down Ezell Street to make a few photos of the Jensen Mansion.

This mansion was built by Arendt Jensen back in 1910. In the year 1887 when he was just 28 he arrived in Gardnerville, NV. There were just two houses in town.

There’s a plaque on the tree out front telling us a little about him and the house.

The Plaque says,” Arendt Jensen had this beautiful mansion constructed for his family in 1910. Mr. Jensen owned a general merchandise store in Gardnerville that became very prosperous. He later established the first bank in Carson Valley. The Douglas County Farmer’s Bank.

An advertisement in the Record Courier newspaper in 1906 stated at the “A. Jensen store you can buy anything at prices that are right.”

Meticulously restored, the Jensen Mansion has been a bed and breakfast in the recent past. The home and grounds also appeared in the movie “The Wizard” staring Fred Savage, and Beau Bridges. The home was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.”

I found this website while doing a bit more research about the man and house. https://www.clairitage.com/2017/12/29/gardnerville-jensen-mansion/

There’s some interesting information on the Clairitage site. There’s a photo of the brick Mercantile building that Jensen built there, and the 3 arched building is still in town. The 3 arched building is a huge antique store that I love to poke around in. My last stop in I scored a lovely duck decoy that now lives in my bedroom. 😊 Okay let’s get back on topic. The door!

Here’s a somewhat closer look at the front door.

I like the privacy lace curtains over the door, and the pineapples at the gate.

The side patio and large front patio, and the widow’s walk are all nice too.

I think it’s a private residence again so I wasn’t able to walk around the grounds or get a peek inside. Maybe one day.

He-Man and I went back to Santa Barbara, CA for a long week-end to celebrate our wedding anniversary at the end of March. While out and about I photographed a couple of doors, and a gate.

When passing near Area 51 one does wonder.

We passed this store on the way down to Henderson, NV and knew we’d have to stop on our way home. It’s got an ice cream shop, and lots of souvenirs all on the Area 51 theme. It’s a fun stop along the journey.

Last week Pit from https://pitsfritztownnews.wpcomstaging.com/2025/02/17/august-september-2024-three-country-tour-in-europe-a-walk-around-chur/

posted a bit about some time he and his wife spent in Chur, Switzerland, and I loved one of the doorways so, I asked him it it would be alright if I tried to draw and paint it. He said yes! Here’s the reference photo. Used with Pit’s permission.

I wanted to simplify the image a lot keeping the door and only a bit of the courtyard. thought the little entry stair would be the hardest for me to draw so did a little thumbnail sketch- it was okay so pressed on and painted this.

I think the courtyard is too busy and I wanted to blur out the sides more so played with another rough sketch.

Chose my colors and painted version 2.

I’ve taken on the challenge of painting 100 mini paintings this year. I’m 16 paintings in. I’m going to paint this in mini this weekend. Time will tell if I can make it to 100 or not.

Thanks again, Pit for letting me use your photo as a reference!

Last week He-Man wanted to break in his new car with a little road trip to the seaside. Santa Barbara, CA. was where he wanted to go. We did some kayaking, birding and a lot of walking. One of the places we birded was Santa Barbara Botanical Garden. The trails are great and while we in the Backcountry section of the garden we came across a Little Library. It’s an Eagle named Nest where you’re invited to enjoy reading while in his nest. I loved it!

This is the coolest Little Library I’ve ever seen.

Thursday Doors- 2024 Leftovers

These are doors I saw during 2024 that I didn’t manage to share plus one a friend sent me that he thought I’d like and he was right, I do!

Through the thicket I spied this old barn and there are doors on that old van too.

©Deborah M. Zajac | http//:circadianreflections.com Image

Another barn. This is one of the last images I took in 2024. I spied this barn while doing the Christmas Bird Count in my county on the 29th of December. It was a very cold, windy, rainy, snow flurries day so my partner and I only saw 23 species during our time out. I loved the Copula door. I imagine Owls using it.

Fishy Door. Every door had a fish over it. I’d bet money who ever lives here fishes.

A Red Shed that could use some TLC.

©Deborah M. Zajac | http//:circadianreflections.com Image

This is the door(s) to the laundry room at a favorite campground.

©Deborah M. Zajac | http//:circadianreflections.com Image

This is the door a friend sent me that he saw while in London and thought of me. Isn’t it gorgeous! Doesn’t the portico look like it’s made of cherry wood?

©Deborah M. Zajac | http//:circadianreflections.com Image

That’s it for my 2024 doors. I hope 2025 has lots of interesting doors in it for us all.

This week we’re sharing our favorite doors from the past year.

I’ll start with Coventry Cross Church.

The Round House from Put-in-Bay, Ohio

From Florida Quaker Steak and Lube has to be here. I loved the door pulls the most.

Speaking of door pulls I have to include the door my friend in CT sent me from her visit to Gillette Castle with its unique door pull and beautiful door.

Oh, the beautiful turquoise door/gate must be included in my favorites for the year.

I have more favorites than I thought I did for this year.

The little bird bungalows

Last but not least, my favorite door of all. From our house to yours, I wish you a very Merry Christmas!
