He-Man and I spent a long week-end visiting my son Big Baby Boy and his fiancé the Dark Haired Beauty down in Southern California. They moved to a new apartment just before Christmas and one town over to San Clemente and we were looking forward to seeing the area, and their apartment.
The area is gorgeous, and their apartment and complex are really nice. They’re happy and we won’t worry about them anymore than normal which is a blessing!
On Saturday afternoon the Dark Haired Beauty and I spent an hour getting our nails done after we had a full, rich breakfast with the guys, and a walk around Dana Point Harbor.
We had a super rich dinner at Morton’s Steakhouse, and hoped to hike on Sunday morning but, we woke up to a rainy day. There was a break in the rain late Sunday afternoon so we high-tailed it to the Cristianitos Trail which is right in their neighborhood. From the trail-head to San Clemente Summit is only 1.4 miles. I stopped to take some photos on the way up.
Spring is in bloom there! I was so surprised to see Lupine this early in full bloom along the trail.

There were huge bushes of Pride of Madeira with new buds. I’d love to go back when they’re in full flower in a few weeks, but know that’s highly unlikely.

The southeasternish view. There are sandbags all over the trail to help keep it from eroding from rain runoff. The clouds were pretty great.

I stopped to catch the sun just before it dipped below the mountains.

From here we made the final push up the hill to the summit. The clouds blocked the sun so there was no color. The image is boring so I won’t share it. We hiked down in near darkness. Fortunately, I brought along my headlamp.
May I present Battle Cat. Big Baby Boy’s and Dark Haired Beauty’s Maine Coon.

He’s a little over a year old, and still has a few more years before he’s full grown. I didn’t realize this breed can get so BIG!
It took him a full day to approach me. I pretty much ignored him hoping that might bring him around. Once he figured I was okay he followed me everywhere, and slept with me for a few hours Sunday night. 🙂 He’s so soft, and cute. I wonder how big he’ll be the next time I see him?
I’m terribly behind reading blogs again. I’ll be catching up! Rain is forecast for Sunday. I’m sure to make headway then. 🙂

I’ve spent a bit more time whittling down my 2016 favorite images and I’ve got it down to 30 now.
Since there are so many still I thought I’d share those with you via a slideshow. This is my first slide show here on WordPress. I need to find and install a different slideshow plugin. I don’t really care for the slideshow controls and caption on my image. 😦 But, it was pretty idiot proof to use, and I am a pretty talented idiot when it comes to computers, programs, and software in general.
I hope you like the images. Feel free to let me know which are your favorites.
I really have to give a “SHOUT OUT!” to my family for giving me so much free time. I was able to put this together a lot faster because they were on vacation and playing with #1 Grandson a lot. That really freed me up to cook, clean, and sort through thousands of images.
Update: I’ve linked this post up with Jim Goldstein’s annual “Best of xxxx” Photography Blog post. To see all the incredible photographer’s and their favorite images of 2016

I’m not sure if this is a Sharp-shinned Hawk, or a Cooper’s Hawk, or something else all together, but I’m leaning towards a Sharp-shinned because of its long legs, overall size, and notched tail feathers.

It wasn’t happy about getting its picture taken. He was on a post in an irrigation canal probably hoping for a fish dinner. 🙂
If you know what species it is I’d love to hear from you!

I mentioned in yesterday’s blog post here that photographing November’s Super Moon was N° 1 on my photography list of things to do this past week-end.
Quite awhile back I made plans to shoot it with with friends, and a photography group we’re in in central California at a Sandhill Crane Refuge called Woodbridge Ecological Reserve aka Isenberg Crane Reserve. The Sandhill Cranes Winter here, and in November both Greater and Lesser Sandhill Cranes are on the Reserve.
The goal was to photograph the Sandhill Crane’s evening Fly-in and rising Super Moon.
Here is a series of images I made.
It was hazy and a little cloudy, but here is the Moon just rising above the mountains. You can barely see the mountains.

…some Sandhill Cranes making their way into the Marsh.

Two Sandhill Cranes flying in high in front of the Moon.

Once the sun went down it was pretty tough shooting. I really pushed the ISO to keep my shutter speed up so the Sandhill Cranes wouldn’t be too blurry, but I failed for the most part. I also focused on the Moon and not the Cranes which didn’t help keep the Cranes sharp. Still. I would do it all over again. It was an amazing evening hearing and seeing the Cranes coming in with this year’s special Super Moon, and the company was the best.
