Rice Silos of Central Valley

While in Central Valley CA. a couple of weeks ago birding I also made a point of stopping to photograph these silos in the late afternoon light.

I’m  enamored with silos and the reflection was particularly nice at this time of day.

It was the tail end of the Rice harvest while I was there, and there were harvesters in the fields, and many semi-trucks driving to the Silos to deliver their loads.

In the shadow  under the Silos there’s a semi, and its driver who spied me and my girl-friend making images of the silos…he scooted behind his rig. There really was no need though. I could barely see him with my eyes! 🙂

Sunflowers

I went with a group of friends to Central Valley Sunday to photograph Sunflowers which are at peak right now.  The fields of yellow are quite beautiful.

The flowers were facing east…anticipating the sunrise perhaps. They were back-lit so, I used my flash to open up the shadows, and keep the sky blue.

These don’t look like they’re the type of Sunflower that produces seeds, and they’re not very tall. Perhaps this crop is used to make cooking oil or feed crop? I’m just guessing though.

I am loving Silos at the moment, and wish I was a little closer to the central valley or countryside where there are more of them.  In the right light I think they’re really interesting and tell wonderful stories.

These silos are located in Sacramento Valley where a lot of rice is grown.

I added a border with the curly edges because it reminded me of the old black and whites

from my childhood, and I thought it worked for this image.

These are rice silos in Sacramento Valley, California.  The Sacramento Valley produces medium, and short grain rices. There are a lot of silos here that I’ve wanted to photograph every time I come up for birding.

This past week-end while on my way from refuge to another for sunset I was just fooling around with the 200-500mm lens and took several images of silos we passed.  I boosted my ISO to increase my shutter speed and made this image from the car while it was zipping along the freeway at 65MPH.

I’d love to spend some time making images of these with the right lens and framing.
