Pumpkin Pie

I hope all those celebrating Thanksgiving had a lovely day, and are recovering from the “food coma”.  We have lots of left-overs and enjoyed turkey sandwiches today, and there’s still pie! Life is good! 🙂

I’m staying away from all stores this week-end. I’m shopping after this week-end and online. I don’t want to deal with parking, traffic, or the crowds. Did you brave the traffic, parking hassles, and crowds today? Did you score any really great bargains? I never have. I guess that’s why I don’t miss going.

Tomorrow I hope to put away the Thanksgiving decorations, and get our tree up. I think Big Baby Boy is going to put up the Christmas lights for us this year. What a blessing he is!

I wish you all a great week-end!

P52 48/52: Give Thanks

I have so much to be Thankful for this Thanksgiving. He-Man is recovering from the knee surgery really well, and he’s allowed to put weight on the leg now. He starts physical therapy tomorrow!

Big Baby Boy is on his way home for a long week-end, and Baby Girl has the day off and she too is home for the holiday along with #1 Grandson.

I’m Thankful for their health, a roof over our heads, plenty of food to keep us nourished, and warm coats, but most of all I’m thankful that we’re all together, and our little family is still together, and we enjoy being together.

I’m thankful for you Dear Friends for your unwavering friendship, love, support and encouragement to never give up on my dreams and goals.

Give ThanksMay your heart be filled with joy, and thankfulness on this Thanksgiving Day.

I’ve been cooking and preparing more meals at home since He-Man and I are “home bound” these days. He’s says I’m spoiling him. I am just a little because he deserves it.

Today’s lunch was on the lite side: a Turkey, Avocado sandwich on Multi-grain bread w/Jarlsberg cheese, tomato, and Wasabi Mayo. The Wasabi mayo is so good, but one must use caution when adding it. It can open up your sinus’ , make your eyes water, and take your breath away if you add too much. 🙂

I’m choosing this image for my Project 52 this week, because I don’t know if I’ll photograph anything else.

Monday was a Terrible, Horrible,No Good, Very Bad day, and I wanted He-Man and myself to be someplace sunny and warm with a nice drink and great view and, not the Emergency Room we were in.

I was concerned about my kitchen pipes they were running really slow and didn’t smell so good no matter how much I put stuff down the drain to deodorize them, so I cleaned out the closet to get to the trap-door, so He-Man could get under the house to inspect the pipes. He cleared up his schedule to have time to get under there and while poking around discovered several sections of the kitchen pipes, and our shower pipes were rotting out. (Our house is over 50 yrs old now.) He touched the shower drain pipe and it crumbled and started leaking. I was above him over the shower and heard his reaction ^^%$#! He came up and called a Plumber. The soonest we could anyone over would be Weds. Ok, we can deal with that we have 2 full bathrooms.

He-Man was going to take a shower in the hall bath and soon discovered that was plugged up. The water wasn’t draining at all. He snaked it out, and still the water wouldn’t drain. <sigh> No showers, and no plumber til Weds! Sponge baths will have to do.

Fast forward to just past 10PM He-Man thought, ” Ah, I can do a quick work-out and get a shower at the gym!” On his way to the gym He-Man’s toe caught on something in the grass; and he fell.  I heard him leave, then the car alarm was beeping blaring and I couldn’t figure out why He-Man wasn’t shutting it off. Shaking my head I went to the front door to find out what was happening and found him laying in the grass! He said he thought he broke his knee. He wasn’t able to stand up. He rolled to a sitting position and I saw straight-away his knee wasn’t right. I knew I had to take him to ER.

Using my rolling office chair we got him in my car, and off we went to the Emergency Room.

Hours, X-Rays, and an Ultra-sound later the Doctors told us the grim news. He’d ruptured his Patella Tendon. The Doctor fixed him up with a knee immobilizer and set him up with an appointment to see the Specialist the next morning. The Specialist ordered surgery, and scheduled for it Wednesday morning.

Oh, but the Plumber is coming on Weds! We had to reschedule that to Friday.

We hardly slept at all since Monday, but got a few hours sleep and got up and ready to get to the hospital for surgery Weds. morning. When we arrived they pushed out the surgery until 1PM because the surgeon had an emergency surgery come up. So we went back home and tried to nap.

We got back to the hospital and the surgery was on time. It went very well, and it was out-patient so He-Man got to come home.

He’s been resting comfortably and has good pain meds. We’re even catching up on sleep now, and the Plumber was out yesterday and fixed the pipes so we have both bathroom showers and my kitchen sinks draining better than they have in months.

He-Man has a L O N G road of recovery and physical therapy ahead of him but I believe “Set backs are the stepping stones to come backs!” We will forge on!

Since I haven’t taken any images of anything but He-Man’s knee this week I thought I’d dig through my archives for something to work on for my weekly Project 52 image. This one of the Blacksmith in front of the Forge seemed to fit nicely with my feelings this week.

A day in the Wild

I spent Saturday at two Wildlife Refuges: Merced National Wildlife Refuge, and San Luis National Wildlife Refuge.

It’s takes just about 2 hours to get there from my house even with a stop for coffee along the way. It’s a fairly easy drive, and the only worrisome part of the drive is crossing Pacheco Pass, and only in the two lane windy section. Fortunately traffic was light going, and not much worse on the way home.

I was hoping to see Sandhill Cranes which my friend Judi shared were starting to return for the Winter.

With the drought being pretty severe here the Refuges have had their water allotments cut way back so, there’s not much water there. I suspect that will influence the number of birds that winter there, and the numbers will be a lot fewer than in past years.

At Merced National Wildlife Refuge there are a couple of observation decks, and a large auto-route with quite a few pull-outs. I arrived not long after the gate opened, and only saw one other car ahead of me. For two hours we were the only people in the refuge. It was really nice not having cars pass me and frighten the birds.

Here are the only Sandhill Cranes I saw. They were in the last field, and as always very skittish. They started moving deeper into the field when I stopped. While I was imaging the group I had the good luck to see two more fly in.

There was a flock of White-faced Ibis here, and they were so hungry they didn’t worry about me at all. There were a few quite close to the road. This one just yawned when I crept up. I love the colors in their feathers.

The White Crowned Sparrows are returning everywhere, even here.

It was foggy when I left home, and there was haze around the countryside, and Refuge. I had hoped to meet my friend Judi here, but the air quality was really bad. There had been a report the night before that the air quality would be bad and people should not go out. I got Judi’s message about that too late; after I arrived at the Refuge. She’s on bottled air and didn’t dare leave the house. You can see the haze in several of the images, but especially in this image of a Great Egret I saw. He didn’t bat an eyelash at my presence! Their stillness and concentration are amazing. I liked the back lighting, and the haze gave the image a soft, dreamy look.

The Coots are back, as are the Shovelers, Mallards, and some Greater Yellowlegs.  While photographing the Greater Yellowlegs I put down my camera to take in the pond. You can see how much the water has already receded/evaporated.

I have a lot of images to go through and can’t share them all in this post. I haven’t even got to the second refuge images yet.
