Last week was pretty full. I went to see Baby Girl, and the Grandson’s for a couple of days then got home and had friends from out of town over for the week-end.
We went birding. I shared with them the spot where the Chick-a-dees ate from my hand we were fortunate and saw them again and they ate from our hands. It was just as fun, exciting, and awesome as it was the first time.
Two Chick-a-dees landed on my hand to get seeds and one didn’t like the idea of sharing at. all. 😂

They were quite picky about the sunflowers seeds they would take often spitting several overboard before selecting one and flying off to the trees with it.
In this image, you can see the seed and its shadow in the air in my hand that the Chick-a-dee just discarded. They all did it. Perhaps they were saving some for later?

My friend Anna was wearing a beanie which was perfect to put some seeds on it and get the Chick-a-dees to land on her cap. They did!

This was our first birding stop for the day and it was so much fun.
I’ll share other birds and wild mustangs from the week-end in future posts.
I hope you all are having a great Friday, and your week-end is a good one!

You’re right … it never gets old 💕
Seeing your post on IG made me want to head out to a local Conservation Area to do the same … but today it rains ☔️

Ugh! Good day to paint then. 😀🎨 It’s not raining here, but I’m going to paint. I’m hoping to save a painting of rocks in snow that I started last week.

I saw your rocks in snow on IG and I think you are really quite good at these watercolours. Mine in comparison are still at a kindergarten level 😀
I started a project on the weekend that has 6 layers to it and I now have the last one to do. Hopefully I’ll get to it tomorrow, but for today, I’m heading off for a hike to an area I’ve never been before. Looking forward to a day outdoors 😀
Hope your’s is a great day!

Thank you so much, Joanne! You’re no Kindergartner! I saw your nude and other work you have talent!
Enjoy the hike! I hope you take photos and share the experience.

Do you know what accounts for these birds being so tame?

I stalked a couple of Cardinals today. My shots weren’t bad but that could have been better. I never thought of a hat as a bird feeder, but it sure looks like it worked. I bet you had fun and quite a lot of laughs. 🙂

Now, that’s my kind of stalking! I hope you share the images. It’s the only way I get to see them. It was a lot of fun and we laughed and giggled. 😀

Thank you so much, Dan! We had a delightful time, and it was the first time one in our party had ever snowshoed but, he’s a skier so of course he left Anna and I in the dust. 😀❄

Magic! A mobile bird feeding station, I have no idea why they are picky over their seeds perhaps it’s because they have a choice.

I never thought about birds having regional accents, but it makes sense. I do NOT understand those wild chick-a-dee eating out of your hands! Mom fed the birds every day, and they all flew away when she opened the door. She would have loved them eating out of her hand. 🙂

The quail here and the Red-wing Black birds have a slightly different chatter to my ear too. It surprised me at first when I heard the quail!
I have no idea how those Chickadees learned that behavior. Now, I’ve seen an ad for a decoy that one can buy to train them eat out of your hand or so the ad says. It’s a fake person sitting in chair with its hand open where you put the seeds and the birds come to eat. Supposedly, after while you can replace that faux person with yourself and it works? I’d rather just sit out there myself like that and give that a go. 😀

Your chickadees look different from the ones we have here. Interesting, isn’t it? A bird or two in your hand are worth any number in a bush! 🙂 The one yelling at the other is so cute. “MY human! Go get your own…”

Some birds even talk differently than they do in CA. For instance the Red-Wing black birds have a distinct high pitch note at the end of their song here that I didn’t hear in CA, and the Quail sound a bit different here. I can’t quite put my finger on the difference, but it’s different.
I wonder now what’s different about yours?

Fascinating. The chickadees here are stockier, and the caps on their heads cover more of their heads. I wonder how they differ in North Carolina? We aren’t going to make it there this spring, as we’d hoped. Maybe lather this summer.

I wonder if you have the Black Capped Chickadee then? There are I think 7 kinds.
Well, that’s too bad you’re not going to make it to NC this Spring, but I know you’ll find something neat to do and paint until you do get there.

Oh, why yes of course, that is what we have. I thought that was what your’s were too, just looking a bit different.

The Mountain Chickadee was a lifer for me! Up until the first time I went to see if they’d eat of my hand I’d only seen the Black- capped ones like you have.

OHhh, ok. How fun that they came to your hand that way.
