Reading at the Lake-

Convict Lake, Eastern Sierras.
UPDATE: I’ve often wondered how Convict Lake got its name, and some have asked me in the questions so I finally looked it up. Here’s how it got its name:
“In September of 1871, a group of convicts escaped from Carson City, Nevada, and were cornered by a local posse by the lake. A shootout took place and two members of the posse were killed, including Benton merchant Robert Morrison. The biggest peak above the lake, Mount Morrison, was named in his honor and the lake was renamed after the incident.
The convicts were eventually caught and two were brought to frontier justice. Several movies have been made about how Convict Lake got its name, and even more movies, commercials and ads have been shot at the picturesque lake. Beauty is just part of its appeal. Convict Lake, however, calls to people with more than just its looks. The unique character of the place has a pull, too.” ~ https://www.visitmammoth.com/blogs/how-convict-lake-got-its-name
It’s a great place to fish, hike, and have ice cream at the store.

This image has a lot going on, and a lot going for it … I love it … and so summery!

Thank you so much, Denise. She looked so right reading in the shade by the lake. It was a great spot…until the foot traffic picked up. 😀📚

We were told there was Homemade Ice Cream at the store, but that was incorrect you have to go up Mammoth for that so we settled for store bought ice cream bars. I had a push up. Oh man, I had forgotten how good that orange sherbet is. Or perhaps it was just so hot it tasted so good? I don’t know, but it was delicious! 😀

The view of that lake does call for some relaxing and reading a good book! Not sure about that name though! lol. We went out on our mountain lake, Smith Mountain Lake, right before the 4th. I do love a good lake surrounded by majestic mountains!! Great capture, Deborah!

I have wondered over the years how it got its name and finally looked it up. I added an update to the post, but in 1871 some Convicts escaped from Carson City, NV prison and they were cornered at the lake by a posse. Two of the posse were killed in the shootout that followed. One of the men killed was Robert Morrison who was a well known Benton, CA merchant. They named the largest mountain over Convict Lake after him and changed the name of the Lake to Convict Lake.

I thought so too, but soon after the foot traffic on the path really picked up and she passed up on the way back to the parking lot. I hope she got a couple of chapters read before that though.

ROFL! I keep meaning to find out why it’s called Convict Lake. I imagine escape convicts hid out somewhere here, but don’t know.
It’s a pretty lake, but I’ve been skunked here for sunrise more times than I care to count.

I thought she found the best spot for quiet reading…at least until more people started showing up to hike around the lake.

That’s too bad. It seems perfect. Boat traffic could distract as well.

Lovely. In fact, as our AC is out until they can get here to replace the unit (1-2 weeks according to the company the owner’s home warranty company sent over), that header photo looks delicious!! 🙂
Happy mid-week, Deborah.

Oh no! I hope you get some lovely cool breezes on and off until they come out to replace the unit.
Happy mid-week to you too!

1-2 weeks is what we were told. 😦 Today was a balmy 95 outside and when I get back from work it was 91 or 92 inside. The sun is behind the houses now, so I’ve opened everything so we might be down to only 90, but it’s supposed to be in the upper 60’s tonight and I’ll have the windows open. Tomorrow only 80, so cooler for a few days, then warming up again next week. Let’s hope they can get here earlier than expected.

I hope they can get out sooner too! No ceiling or portable fans in the house? That will help when the temperature does start to drop.

Ceiling fans in the living room and bedrooms. Our bedroom, the kitchen, and the living room are unfortunately on the west side. Just bought a box fan tonight.

It was starting to get more foot traffic on the trail so this poor young lady gave up her book and passed up on the trail heading back to the parking lot. She looked like she found the perfect spot for a good book to me.
