What’s new?

I hope everyone had a great holiday season, and the year is starting off well for you.

My year ended with laryngitis, and a cold. My voice is still a bit cracky, and now He-Man has the cold so, we’re off to a slower start, but I can’t complain too much it’s just a cold!

It’s also been raining here for nearly a week which has kept me indoors; except for a couple of short walks in between rain showers.  That has given me time to take down Christmas decorations, and play a little bit with my newest camera gear. For Christmas He-Man gave me The Core Set of lenses by Olloclip.  Olloclip makes lenses for cell phones.Olliclip Core Set The Core Set comes with 3 lenses a Super Wide, Fisheye, and Macro 15x.

Of the three the one I’ve been experimenting with is the macro 15x lens.  You unscrew the fisheye lens and underneath it is the macro lens.  Addendum: I should add that I use a 3rd party camera app called ProCamera. It’s my favorite camera app.

Here are some images I’ve made with the macro lens,

Oh Snap Macro

You need to get right on top of the subject then focus with this macro lens. The depth of field is teeny tiny.  Holding steady is tricky so,I need to get a tripod set up for it, and I’d like to get the Olloclip 7x macro lens for some working room and get more in focus.  GAS rearing its ugly head again.

I’m looking forward to getting to use this kit more as I go about my day in the house and out…that’s assuming I remember to grab my phone on the way out the door!

GAS= Gear Acquisition Syndrome.

  1. As I read this I’m sniffling through a miserable cold~hopefully you guys are all better by now. I’ve been so intrigued by the lenses made for phones. You certainly got amazing results with yours. The skill of the photographer really shows!

  2. Happy New Year Deborah! I hope you are feeling better. I didn’t know they sold accessories like this. The pictures are awesome. My husband just got the 7 plus and we have enjoyed messing around with it. The quality is amazing for a phone.

    1. Thank you Hannah! I hoping to get the hang of using this macro lens, and have fun while doing it.

I’m finally feeling like I’m going to beat this cold. My voice is back to normal. Now if the barometer would hold steady my sinus’ would stabilize and I’d be right as rain.

  3. Great captures. I’ve been a little disappointed with the techno lens attached to my 7plus. I think it’s operator error though since I’m also having issues in normal mode with it blowing out with bright lights (i.e. moon, gauges in car, white shoes). I’ll get the hang of it eventually! 🙂

    1. Thank you Amy!
I rarely use the camera that came with iPhone 7Plus. I use a 3rd party camera that lets me shoot RAW called Pro Camera. It has lots of manual controls like adjusting the EV so you don’t blow your highlights, and there’s a low light feature for night/dim light.

  4. I really love macro abstractions. You are going to have lots of fun with your new toys. Some of these must be difficult to hold the camera steady and get what you want. Nice lighting. Thoughtful compositions.

  5. Boy am I glad I wandered over to your blog. I’ve been wondering about those clip on lenses for my phone but just wasn’t sure I could rely on the advertising claims. I’m going to check these out. Stay warm.

    1. Thank you Candy! I’m staying indoors through the worst of the storm. We’re supposed to be getting a break from the rain around 4pm. If we do I want to go check out the creek and see how high it is.

This brand has 3 different sets so you can get a variety of lenses for your cell phone. The macro lens is definitely going to enhance my iPhone photo making experience.

      You stay warm too! xx

  6. The photos came out very precise and detailed, Deborah! I think you have found something to capture unique perspective on life, nature and man made items, as well.
You are on your way to making my wish come true, for you to capture unique images to share with us!

  7. Ooh! Thank you for posting this Deborah! 👍 I’ve been wanting to get something to enhance the camera on my iPhone 6S+ Looks like you will be having lots of fun!! 📷

            1. Exactly! I’ve been looking at set ups so I can mount my cell phone to my existing tripod, and what I need to attach it to my little Gorilla Pod. I hope I don’t have to reinvent the wheel that way. 🙂

    1. I’ve been there Marian! I hardly cook or bake anymore so haven’t had GAS for Kitchen stuff for sometime. Then yesterday I saw a recipe for chicken and potatoes that requires thinly sliced potatoes. I never did purchase and mandolin, or large food processor and this recipe has given me a slight case of GAS for one or the other. 🙂

  8. Oh laryngitis is no fun, hope that’s well and truly behind you, Deborah. Interesting images, looking forward to what will be heading our way as 2017 gets going 🙂

  9. I Look forward to seeing additional photos. This is a potential gift for our daughter. I haven’t figured out close-up mode on my camera yet, so I don’t think I’m ready to start fussing with my phone. The macro seems to drill right into the subject. I like the initial result. Happy experimenting.

    1. Thank you so much Dan!

The built in camera on my iPhone 7+ doesn’t have a macro mode, and neither does my favorite 3rd party camera app, so having a lens that attaches to my cell phone has been something I’ve been wanting for awhile.

Thinking about Faith and attachments for her iPhone macro wish list take a look at LensBaby LM series for the cell phone. The LM 10 has been on my wish list for awhile too. I’ll be looking at it as well as the Olloclip Macro Set.

            1. BUSTED! I hoped that was a winner cause, LOVE. Only daughter, Daddy’s girl, Mom’s BFF ???

Faith, I gave it my best shot! 🙂 Fingers crossed if this is on your list you get one!

On a serious note if she has the iPhone 7Plus talk to her first about what lens she’d like. That phone comes with a wide angle lens, and the telephoto lens so, she might not want those in addition. It would just duplicate what she already has.

A macro lens kit is all I felt lacking since I upgraded my iPhone 5 to the iPhone 7Plus.
The Fisheye is neat but, I don’t see me using it often.
I don’t use the one I have for my DSLR outside of night sky imaging, and really wide places like cathedrals and the like.

FWIW: There is a Photographer code. Sticking together when having a GAS attack is a no brainer and required! Just sayin. 🙂

            2. I’m sure Faith would support you. She would encourage a return trip to NYC, just to visit B&H. We have gotten to the point of asking her about things first. It’s like with me and tools.

            3. 9th Ave is where things start getting sketchy, you may not have ventured down there. Next time. And B&H is 2 blocks north and 1 block west of the Molly Wee 🙂
