Hounds Tongue

Yesterday while hiking the Dorn Trail in Clear Lake, CA I saw this wildflower called Hounds Tongue. It’s named for its broad leaves which you can’t see here. To get this macro view I used 3 extensions tubes; the Kenko

36mm, 20mm, and 12mm with my Nikkor 50mm f1.8 prime lens. It took some patience to get the focus lined up. The depth of field is really shallow even using all 3 tubes, and stopping down to f11. I really think I need a focusing rail.

I’d like to get one that doesn’t break the bank since I really only do macro photography in the Spring and Summer when flowers are abundant. Are you using a focusing rail? Recommendations are welcome!

Spring is popping up here in Northern California. While in Muir Woods National Monument last week-end I saw quite a few Trillium in bloom. Did you know their common name is Western Wake Robin? I didn’t.

Summer Solstice Hike

My morning hike up to Vista Point this morning was lovely. There were butterflies flitting around the wildflowers lining the trail, and about 2 miles from the top there was a plant with several butterflies warming their wings. I think the flowers are Globe Gilia, and the butterflies Variable Checkerspots.

This one must have been cold. It didn’t move when I approached it. It was right in the middle of the trail.

and further up the trail was this lizard warming itself in the morning sun.

Summer temperatures have arrived in Silicon Valley. The last two days it’s been hot. This morning at 6:30am it was warm. The canopy felt wonderfully cool this morning.

The view from Vista Point was marred by fog and smog laying across the valley like a veil, but above it you can see the Diablo Mountain Range. Over there on the right are Mt. Allison, and Mission Peak rising above the haze, and in the valley below are the large hangers of Moffet Field Naval Station.

I walked over to the bench today, and looked back. I loved the blue sky and Moon looking down on me.

Total elevation gained- 1,962ft

Under the Canopy on a Sunday Morning

I headed out of my hotel early to do the mile hike out to Root Creek Falls that for me was easy rolling hills densely forested with pines. Here the trail ends. The fall is little now. The snow is nearly melted I guess. I headed back and caught Crag Trail hiking up a ways then turning back when it began to get too hot and I left the shelter of the trees. The high on this day was 100 degrees. By 11:00AM it was 80 already.
When I got back to the parking lot I met a Ranger and spoke to him about the falls, and other shooting locations in the park. He told me I really need to get back to Root Creek Falls in April when it’s gushing and huge. I hope to do that! He told me about a spot where the fall has a 500foot drop. I’d like to see it.

PP- Not a lot done to these. My standard sliders are vibrance, and clarity. No crop, but did resize them.
