Whatever Weds. 4 Points

A girlfriend and I got up early after a snowstorm in January for a sunrise photography outing and then we headed to a birding location when we came across this guy along the way.

Did you know that one the west coast it’s common to only count the points on one side of the antlers, and on Mule Deer like these you don’t count the brow tines- the ones coming above the brow?

On the east coast they count all the points. Who knew? I’ve gone with the west coast rule of thought and counted only one side. 😀

  2. Love your play on words with “point” at the end:) Smiled, I can see they (the deer) are curious and alert, to bolt in a second in case you are one of those dangerous species:)

  9. I did not know the coastal difference between counting points!! I do love learning new things. 🙂 These are just gorgeous shots, Deborah! We have quite a few does and bucks in our neighborhood. I love catching a view of them.

    1. Oh, you’re so lucky! I used to have them in the next neighborhood over where I’d hike and see them almost daily. Now, not so much.

      The East/West thing is funny. I’m sure there are North/South things too, but not living there I don’t hear about those. Do you now that you’re a Northerner? ❤

      1. Virginia is usually still considered a Southern state. Although there is supposedly a huge difference between here and NoVA (aka: Northern Virginia), which I would suspect is why it has it’s own demonym. lol. And I do hear about North/South things. Whether or not they are true, I can’t say. I’m still a Florida girl at heart, and while it’s technically southern geographically, it doesn’t usally get included in southerisms (however a google search of “Florida man” tells you it holds legends of its own). 🙂

  11. I didn’t know this about counting the tines. The one and only time I ever saw a deer with antlers, I was so enthralled I never bothered to count tines or even lift my camera. I just stood there hyperventilating with excitement 🙂

    Great photos, Deborah. You’ve captured the gentle innocence on their faces which just re-enforces why I love them so much.

    1. I don’t see them in the field behind me so didn’t think they came down here. They’re closer to the base of the mountain and I’m in the middle.

      They’re so cute aren’t they. I won’t mind if I get stopped behind you to take photos of deer or any other wildlife or something interesting. 😀

    1. Let me know what he says please. I wonder if you have the same counting convention up there? I don’t know where the line is for East/West but imagine it’s close to the Rockies.

      I didn’t want to distract from the Deer, but have a thing about putting my name on my images. 😀

    1. I have heard it done both ways and wondered so I looked it up. Who knew it’s another East/West thing? 😀

      If I had a green thumb and spent countless hours in the garden I’d probably have mixed feeling too. That house there had a water bowl out so maybe they don’t mind them.
