Beautiful shots, Deborah, capturing the butterfly from all angles! I saw quite a few pipevine swallowtails on a butterfly trip Thursday that took me to Yolo County but did not even get a blurry photo. They were circling the just-bloomed buckeye trees at the entrance to Putah Creek. It was after 6 pm and they would not perch–at least not where I could see them. Maybe I will get back there someday.
For Thursday doors, you might take a wide lens to Elizabeth Gamble Garden in Palo Alto. It’s just down Embarcadero from PA Baylands (3rd left after Middlefield Rd). But pack a macro lens too, for the flowers. Open daylight hours, free admission.

I hope you get back to Putah Creek. I’ve seen lots of reports from that area with great birding, and now butterflies! 🙂
Hey, let’s do Elizabeth Gamble Garden together! It’s been ages since I’ve seen you.
Thanks for the lovely comment!

These each have special unique beauty in their features! I love the fabulous angle on the first and second pictures. The black wings still look sheer in these, shimmery and luminescent. A truly special treat, thank you! xo

Thank you so much Robin! I was wondering if that first butterfly was newly emerged waiting for its wings to dry out? It was there a long time. It was definitely new looking. 🙂

I like how still and it does look like it is waiting for its wings to prepare for flight, Deborah. Simply lovely to see a rather rare type, which I’m not sure if I have seen this type before.
Hope you have a special weekend, friend! xo

I don’t ever think I’ve seen one of these. He’s beautiful. I love that center shot, almost 2D butterfly.

Thank you so much Dan! I have to go back to my archives and see if this is the type of butterfly I saw years ago but didn’t Identify then. If it’s different this is a first for me too! 🙂

Beautiful image! I find it intriguing that we love butterflies, yet it is still an insect. See what a little glorious colour and good PR can do for you 😉

Wow, aren’t they gorgeous? I seldom see these as they are usually farther south. You’ve done him proud 🙂

They are gorgeous Melissa! It was the first time I’d ever seen this butter fly up close and got some decent images made of it. It’s so beautiful I want to grow some Dutchman’s Pipevine to have some here. 🙂

You’ve done this gorgeous Swallowtail great justice, Deborah. Beautifully captured and lovely depth. Sadly, butterflies are in spectacular decline in large parts of the UK. Your shots are a definite day-brightener!! 😂

Thank you so much Rob! It was a such a treat to see them. I wonder if Butterflies are on the wane here too? Thankfully this garden is dedicated to having plants that they love to feed on so they have a home there.

I’m glad to hear it, Deborah. My garden is secluded, crammed with all sorts of many different plants and still butterflies struggle to thrive here. I wonder if summer will change that.. fingers crossed! 😉
