I actually painted this in late October and thought if it came out alright I’d post it for this month’s Draw-a-Bird day.
I’ve never seen a Barred Owl in the wild but, would love to!

Reference/inspiration Stokes Field Guide to the Birds of North America
Painted on Canson 140lb coldpress watercolor paper
Paint: Turner Artist Watercolors; sap green, maya yellow, burnt umber, permanent yellow, ultramarine blue
Ink: Carbon Platinum Pen and ink
Brushes: Escoda #6, rd #2 rd , Mimik Kolinsky #12
More to come…
What a lovely, sweet painting! I’m so glad you posted it. There is a man who travels all over Illinois leading owl walks. I recently went to a program he put on, complete with calls and stuffed birds. It was quite a performance! He is particularly fond of barred owls.

Oh that walk sounds lovely!! I’d go on one or more of his walks!
I hope I get to see a Barred owl one day.
Thank you for the compliment on my painting! It means a lot coming from you!! xx

How cool you know your Spirit Bird! I don’t have a sense of knowing mine like I do my Spirit Animal. It’s Deer. 🙂 Perhaps I don’t have one.
Occasionally, I feel as if I’ve walked with the Spirits of certain birds, and animals when I happen to see them in the wild and they see. It’s hard to describe the spiritual feeling I get, but it’s quite a blessing!

I once posted a story of a cardinal who came knocking on my window as almost a spiritual message from my grandfather. I painted for my Mom’s 85th birthday, a pair of young cardinals with autumn leaves. I am hoping my column of tags would lead someone if they wanted to see this or read the tale. I sent it out into the magazine world and the only place who sent me a note back was Guideposts. They did many people have felt that birds can be “angels” and appreciated the story. (No, didn’t publish it though! 😉 )

Wonderful painting, Deborah :-). Your owl is beautiful, and I love the colours and sense of light – very peaceful. I’ve never seen a Barred Owl but I did see a couple of Great Horned Owls last week. Hope you get to see one soon!

Very nicely done, Deborah. I have only seen owls a few times in my life, and I don’t know what kind they were. This is very pretty.

Thank you so much Dan! I’ve only seen Barn, Burrowing, and Long Earred owls and not all that often! Owls are so neat. It would be neat to see a Barred owl, and a Snowy Owl wouldn’t it? I’d be over joyed!
