This little bird lives in my neighbors Oleander bush, and I rarely see it. I tried photographing it last year when it flew up to the fence, but the shots were through a window, and I really wanted an image without a window between us.
A few days ago while #1 Grandson was in the backyard playing and I was sitting in the middle of the lawn hoping the Chick-a-Dee would stop making such a fuss about us being out there and fly down to the feeder so I could take its picture the Hermit Thrush flew up to the top of the fence to see what all the fuss was about.
What luck! I got two frames of it before it jumped down into the safety of the Oleander.
I thought it was Fox Sparrow, but now that I have decent image to compare with the birds in my bird books I now think this little bird is a Hermit Thrush.
If I’m wrong please let me know!

I’ve seen this bird a few times on our local bird walks, but it is always hiding in the brush, difficult to see and impossible to photograph.

Thank you for the visit and comment Robert! That’s how I’ve felt about this elusive bird. He rarely is on the fence and has only been on my deck once that I’ve seen.

It does have a pretty tune, but I wouldn’t recognize it. I haven’t heard it enough! 🙂 Isn’t it exciting to see a “lifer” bird!
Oh Melissa, I saw a bird of my dreams yesterday and it was awesome! A Vermilion Flycatcher Male! I’ll be posting images soon. It is a “lifer” for me.

Yay! You got an awesome photo! It is much nicer not to have the window between you and the bird :-). I think your ID is correct. The face/beak is American-Robin-like and the colours of the tail and back are different (there are some similar thrushes but the brown hue of their back and tail is the same). I’ve only seen glimpses of brown and white thrushes… so not sure which ones I’ve seen. I read about a Hermit Thrush sighting early this month in Calgary, but they aren’t usually seen here in the winter.

Not a bird I’m familiar with but it is very pretty. Nice capture. I guess it pays to have that camera with you Deborah.
