Under the Canopy on a Sunday Morning

I headed out of my hotel early to do the mile hike out to Root Creek Falls that for me was easy rolling hills densely forested with pines. Here the trail ends. The fall is little now. The snow is nearly melted I guess. I headed back and caught Crag Trail hiking up a ways then turning back when it began to get too hot and I left the shelter of the trees. The high on this day was 100 degrees. By 11:00AM it was 80 already.
When I got back to the parking lot I met a Ranger and spoke to him about the falls, and other shooting locations in the park. He told me I really need to get back to Root Creek Falls in April when it’s gushing and huge. I hope to do that! He told me about a spot where the fall has a 500foot drop. I’d like to see it.

A Predawn Hike

This morning I met some fellow Night Photographers for a Sunrise Hike up to Mission Peak in Fremont,CA.

A last minute change of plans to start at a different trail head took us to Peak Trail Loop. We started up at 4:50AM a bit late. We start the climb at 500ft. The Peak is just 3 short miles up and Peaks at 2517ft.

The group moved a lot faster than I did. I wasn’t going to make the Peak before sunrise so I decide to grab a shot during morning twilight or my favorite “blue period” just before dawn.  This was taken just above bench #3.

I made it up to Bench #4  and took one last shot of the valley below in the dawning light. I think I’m at about 2400 ft. here. The morning was foggy, damp, and overcast as you see. This is our typical Summer pattern here in the Bay Area. Although it’s cooler than normal.

From here I headed back down to a hot cup of tea, and breakfast. I will hike this trail again and perhaps go all the way to the top next time.

My twice weekly morning constitution

I’ve been hiking up the “Steep Hill” twice a week in preparation for an upcoming July hiking trip.

The grade of the Steep Hill is more than 11% at its steepest. 11% the rest the way from what I can find on the web.

Once at the top if you continue on there are two more hills which by comparison are not steep at all, but brutal after the initial climb up . After that the trail flattens out and then descends. It’s quite a workout for a short 2.5 mile hike.

Here are some photos of the Steep Hill and one of the Mt. Umunhum taken while on my way up The Steep Hill recently.
