This is a really cool photo, Deborah. All the little sliders on the outside and the big spiny softshell in the middle. And all of them soaking up the sun in Sunday stillness.

I had no idea there was any sort of soft-shelled turtle. It seems pretty large too. LOL, I admit that it creeped me out a little bit, despite the fact that turtles have never had that effect on me before.
A fun and unexpected photo, Deboah. The landscape is gorgeous too. Hugs.

I’d never heard of a spiny softshell, and had no idea what it was. Now, I’m a bit educated; it is a turtle, one of our largest freshwater turtles. It’s sort of an odd looking thing, but that may be a result of unfamiliarity on my part. I’ve never seen so many turtles of any sort gathered in one place. What a great photo!

I had never seen or heard of the Spiny Softshell either before this visit to this nature preserve. It is kind of weird looking I agree!
Thank you so much, Linda! It was cool seeing so many in one spot sunning themselves that day.

I am surprised to see all the turtles still out and about. I guess the location is warm enough for them to do that. And best for them to take advantage of the sun’s rays on these December days of shortened daylight hours.

That image was from a summer trip to see our son down in SoCal. We all took a day trip up to Long Beach to this nature preserve where I saw the all the turtles.

Great shots, Deborah! I chuckled at the Slide(r) photo connections! 😉 That’s one fine looking softshell biggie!

LOL! I’m glad you liked that connection. 😀
It was huge compared to the little Red eared ones. It was the first time I’d ever seen one of these Softshell Spiny ones as well.
Thank you so much, Donna! 😍

Was that wooden platform built for the turtles, or were they just taking advantage of it?

I don’t really know, but it’s a boon for the turtles! 😀

I love those turtles, Deborah. Was that platform attached to anything, or did it – and the turtles – float along with the current?

I can’t say for sure, but it wasn’t moving so probably fixed in place. I’m glad they found it and were enjoying the afternoon sun. 😀

What an interesting photo Deborah, to see these turtle like creatures sharing the area with such geometric positioning.

Aren’t they neat! I think they’re making room for that big Spiny Softshell in the center. I thought he looked like the King Turtle giving a speech at the time. 😀

It was a neat sighting especially since I had no idea what the big turtle was. It was cool finding out about them when I researched a bit when I got home.

Great shots, Deborah. I love the name Prison Hill. Gotta be a story there.

Thank you so much, John! There are some fun and interesting names around here. Prison Hill is named for the prison that sits under it. There are lots of prisons in NV. 3 that I know of just in Carson City. Not too far up the road from me is Deadman’s Creek trail. That has an old west mystery to it. I heard two ranchers shared/owned a ranch together out in the southeast corner of Washoe Valley. I heard they sold produce and supplies to the miners in the Comstock. Who knows though…anyway they were found dead in their cabin in June 1865. No one knows for sure what happened. Robbed and murdered, or they had fight resulting in one killing the other then committed suicide? It’s a mystery!
The ruin of their farm is called Deadman’s Ranch.

Cool, a turtle surfboard! Winter is coming! Thought you might have received more snow these past days but it looks the mountain got a little dusting!

It was a neat sighting. Further south the range has had more snow but, nothing but flurries down here in the valley so far. Winter seems to be letting Fall have its full season. Last year by this time we had a lot of snow on the ground and shoveling a lot already. We’ll see what this winter brings.
