  1. This is a really cool photo, Deborah. All the little sliders on the outside and the big spiny softshell in the middle. And all of them soaking up the sun in Sunday stillness.

  2. I had no idea there was any sort of soft-shelled turtle. It seems pretty large too. LOL, I admit that it creeped me out a little bit, despite the fact that turtles have never had that effect on me before.
A fun and unexpected photo, Deboah. The landscape is gorgeous too. Hugs.

  3. I’d never heard of a spiny softshell, and had no idea what it was. Now, I’m a bit educated; it is a turtle, one of our largest freshwater turtles. It’s sort of an odd looking thing, but that may be a result of unfamiliarity on my part. I’ve never seen so many turtles of any sort gathered in one place. What a great photo!

  4. I am surprised to see all the turtles still out and about. I guess the location is warm enough for them to do that. And best for them to take advantage of the sun’s rays on these December days of shortened daylight hours.

    1. Thank you so much, John! There are some fun and interesting names around here. Prison Hill is named for the prison that sits under it. There are lots of prisons in NV. 3 that I know of just in Carson City. Not too far up the road from me is Deadman’s Creek trail. That has an old west mystery to it. I heard two ranchers shared/owned a ranch together out in the southeast corner of Washoe Valley. I heard they sold produce and supplies to the miners in the Comstock. Who knows though…anyway they were found dead in their cabin in June 1865. No one knows for sure what happened. Robbed and murdered, or they had fight resulting in one killing the other then committed suicide? It’s a mystery!
The ruin of their farm is called Deadman’s Ranch.

    1. It was a neat sighting. Further south the range has had more snow but, nothing but flurries down here in the valley so far. Winter seems to be letting Fall have its full season. Last year by this time we had a lot of snow on the ground and shoveling a lot already. We’ll see what this winter brings.
