We’ve had two female, and one male Black-chinned Hummingbird regularly visiting my feeder. I like to think the females are mother and daughter, and the male is the father. However, all is not peaceful around the feeder oh no, they’re fighting for territorial rights! The two females have no problem drinking together, but the male has sharing issues.

When I first put the feeder up it was only the male coming by, but then a female found it, and now a second female started coming by about 2 weeks ago. I think I’ll need a second feeder soon. I’m refilling the feeder every 4-5 days.

I love seeing them coming by on and off all day.

We have had #1 Grandson for an extra week which has been wonderful, but, it’s about to come to an end… really he’s going home this week-end. School starts up soon for him.

  2. Nice shot, Deborah! We also have a feeder and there often is a great battle, hummingbird style, over the feeder. I haven’t paid attention to whether both genders squabble but we all know males can be ornery in any species. 🙂 I think it is recommended to change the hummer water during the time span you mention anyway because after awhile the sugar water can become toxic.

    1. Thank you Steve. I didn’t know the sugar nectar can become toxic! I hadn’t read that when looking recipes to make my own nectar.
      I have read to add a wee bit extra sugar if it’s going to be raining so it doesn’t get watered down.

    1. Thank you so much, Judy! I may need to get another feeder. I hope #1 Grandson has a good school year as well. 5th grade already, and Littlest is going to Kindergarten!!! They’re both excited and a little sad to see summer vaca end. Me too. It’s bittersweet.

  4. Lovely capture of the hummingbird and video, Deborah! I had a baby ruby-throated born in my bckyard of our CA home three years ago. When he was still in the nest, I got a ladder, climbed up to see him. He got scared and flew out, dropped on the ground. That scared me. I put him back. He flew out after three more days. He never left my garden. His parents were gone the first winter but he stayed behind, stayed under a thick bush when it rained. For three years, the first thing I did when I got up in the morning was to find him and watched him for a while before doing anything else. Now I moved to Oregon eight months ago, I hope to see more hummingbirds in my new garden.

  6. I am amazed by how you were able to capture the hummingbird in flight. WOW!!! I love the end of August and the beginning of September because of the “back to school” feeling a being able to learn new things.

  7. Your Hummingbirds are so amazing and cute Deborah, we do not have birds like that here. Grandchildren are such a delight, so glad you have been enjoying time together. I saw my granddaughter for dinner last night before she went with my daughter to the big semi final Matildas game here in Sydney, they are such a delight.

    1. It wasn’t a common one I saw while living in California either. The most common one I saw there was the Anna’s. It’s been a treat seeing this species here in my new home state of NV.
      I’ve got my eye on a hummingbird feeder heater so I can tempt them into staying for winter too. 😀

  13. I love the way the birds approach teh feeder, hover for a while and then do sit down. But not for long. Somehow they seem not to be made for staying put. They are so quick! Great picture! It will probably be silent in the house when your grandson is going back to old daily routine. Have a good rest of the week Deborah!

  14. I love that still photo. You caught that with perfect light. The feeder looks big enough for all of them to belly up to the bar. I guess he has to make a statement.

    Enjoy the last few days with #1GS – school starting is no longer the seasonal shift around here that it was. I have to say, I don’t miss it.
