While in Il, USA I spied a new to me Butterfly at one of the reserves I visited.

Giant Swallowtail Butterfly

The Giant Swallowtail is the largest Butterfly of all of North America, but Female Tiger Swallowtails are nearly the same size.

They live mostly in the Eastern US and it typically stays in wooded areas and residential gardens.

This one looks like an adult and a bit tattered, but I was thrilled to see it!

FYI- I’ll be taking a break from the blog until mid August. I’ll have limited internet so I’ll catch up with you then. Be safe, and well until then!

  1. Thanks for the picture of the giant swallowtail. There were several swallowtails here both yellow and black varieties while I was dabbing pollen yesterday. There was also a swallowtail caterpillar on the fennel. I will have to see if it is still there and get a picture today. Enjoy your travels Deborah.

        1. How exciting!! You know way more than I do…I don’t know what a Swallowtail caterpillar looks like! I’d have to look it up and hope I could see what makes it so. Sometimes Identifying birds is so hard I can imagine it’s that way with most things.
