In July and early August the wildflowers were in bloom up in the mountains above Lake Tahoe and a lot of them were at perfect peek on the morning of July 31st.

Columba was the Latin word for dove, and columbines were named for the supposed resemblance of the inverted flower to a cluster of doves.

These are such appealing flowers. I’ve only seen them in the wild one time, quite west of my area, and as soon as I saw them, I wished they grew here. Your portrait is lovely!

They are one of my favorite wildflowers. It’s always a treat to see them in the mountains in mid summer when spring is bloom up there.
