Friday’s Feathered Friends- Bald Eagle

A few weeks ago while He-Man was riding his bike I was birding and while driving out in the ranches I spied two Adult Bald Eagles just hanging out next to each other on telephone poles. I hung around for quite awhile hoping they’d fly, but they were content to continue surveying the land so I moved on. Here’s the first one I saw.

Looking not much different is the second one. I think they’re a pair though they were pretty close in size so I’m not positive about that.

Fun Facts:

Bald Eagles have a reputation of being bandits. They will steal fish from Osprey’s talons in mid air!

The largest Bald Eagle nest on record is in St. Petersburg, FL, which was 2.9 meters in diameter, and 6.1 meters tall. (114.17 X 240.15 inches) HUGE!

Bald Eagles live a long time. The oldest recorded bird in the wild was at least 38 years old when it was hit by a car and killed in New York in 2015. It had been banded in 1977.

Fun facts gleaned from allaboutbirds.org

I hope you all have a wonderful week-end!

  1. Oh, Wow! No wonder the eagle is symbolic in many cultures. “Bandits” and gumption to steal fish from talons in mid air. Exceptional photos! Thank you for sharing, Deborah. Happy Valentine’s Day! ❤️

      1. Your welcome. Years ago, there used to be a nest of those close to the highway near Llano – a wonderful spot to watch them, But after a storm broke the tree they nested in, they moved to a different one, way further fom the highway. Maybe that’s good for them.

  2. Gorgeous! There used to be a place near Buffalo, Wyoming where right along the highway at the top of a phone? pole there was a platform that for many years had an eagles next on it. It was such a joy to be driving along and see eagles, sometimes still in the nest.

    1. How exciting for you to be there seeing them often! It’s a seasonal thing here mostly. They come down for calving season which is wrapping up now. If we’re lucky we’ll get a pair that take up full time residence. I hope!

Thank you so much for the lovely comment, Deb! 🙏🏻😀

  3. They are magnificent birds. These are great pictures. I saw my first pair up close last November. It was a couple days before their nesting area was closed to the public. They are so fun to watch. I didn’t know the fun facts you posted, that was cool.

      1. Probably not. They next in the park along the Windsor Locks Canal. The entire canal path is closed from November to April. If the nest is successful, the lower have remains closed until the eaglets have fledged. The good news is that the photos I have of the nest give me a good idea where it is in relation to some landmarks along the river. I’m hoping to be able to get some photos from the other side of the river. There is a road that runs very close to the bank in several places.
