Spring was bloom in the high desert and I saw some lovely wildflowers while I was camping and out birding. Here are three.

+1 I think this is a Great Spangled Fritillary. Please let me know if I’m wrong!

I hope your week is going well, and you aren’t being overheated with really warm temperatures this week. By the week-end our temperature which has been on the cooler side for days are going to start climbing again and by Friday we’re supposed to be hitting the 90’s F.

I hope to be out on the lake having a paddle with He-Man this morning…fingers crossed the wind isn’t blowing! If I’m late getting to your blogs and comments this morning you know why. 😊🛶

    1. We had snow several times in May this year. Winter just didn’t want to give it up again.

      Hopefully, it’s cooler there on the hot days since you’re in the mountains. I was up in Tahoe yesterday and it was 10 degrees cooler. I needed a sweater until mid morning.

  10. Great reason to be late in responding. Hope it was smooth sailing. 🙂 Great photos, and I hope you enjoyed your trip. 94 heading to 99 with a real feel of 106 right now. I’m inside sewing and reading with the air on and the ceiling fans going. Hot, hot, hot.

    1. You have a great reason to be inside! I’m looking forward to seeing the finished sewing project if you care to share it. You always make great things.

      It’s heating up today in the low 90’s so, I’m up early and planning to head out early for my little hill climb walk. We’ve had the ceiling fans going non stop for days now. I’ve opened the back door to let some cool morning air in before I need to shut the house up again.

  16. Nice bokeh effects on all your shots! Wildfires are springing up in many locations of Northern CA, especially in Sonoma area and many insurance companies canceled homeowners policies and refused to continue to do business in CA or raised all our policies to subsidize others due to the wildfires threats. Coastal area has been hot for a couple days then cooled off so I’m happy for the cooler temps. Stay safe and cool!

    1. Oh not that area again!! Remember we lost a photographer friend in the Santa Rosa fire several years back. I hope they get them contained.
      We were under fire and wind warnings all week-end up until Tuesday, but the wind is down so there’s that. Praying for no fires!

      1. Yes, I remember that photographer friend; nice quiet fellow and he used the same camera system as me so we shred some techniques when his camera had my similar functions. That sad situation really brought home the impact of wildfires!
        I believe in the climate warming issues and the planet is heating up unless we do something. Bill Gates is funding a new type of nuclear plant the uses metal instead of water to cool the reactor; claims it’s more efficient, stable and safer. Let’s hope he’s right!

  19. How fragile and tender those flowers are! (And the butterfly of course) Over here we are finally getting a hint of summer. Very very wet till now and cool. But there was a large yellow thing in the sky this morning that Google identified as ‘sun’. So yeah, we are hopeful. Don’t melt Deborah and come back from paddling safely!

  20. Enjoy your time on the lake, Deborah. I don’t often know one plant from another and I’m worse with birds and butterflies. I’ll take your word for it on everything. Your photos are lovely. They all have such a soft green. The flowers are beautiful.

    We are well into the mid-upper 90s this week. Not much going on around here.

    1. Thank you so much, Dan! We had a lovely first paddle of the season. We only went out just about mile then lingered a bit then slowly paddled back. We don’t want to be too sore tomorrow.

      Not much going on there? How’s the bench coming along?

      1. Good idea to take it slow.

        The bench is ready for the last big task before assembly. I’ll have some pictures to share on Saturday. I’m going to visit my brother for a while, so not much going on prior to that.

  21. Thank you so much, Linda!! They sure are similar! There’s a Great Basin Fritillary that is also really similar! I think you’re right though and that spot on the wings isn’t present on the one I saw so ruling out the Great Spangled. I haven’t seen this one before so it would be neat to get a proper ID on it.

    What do you think does the Great Basin Fritillary look more like it? Looking at images of the Pearl Crescent and the one I saw the Pearl Crescent has a lot more dark, thick bands than the one I saw.

  22. The flowers are lovely: particularly the Columbine, which don’t grow in my area. The false lily of the valley reminds me of a flower that does grow in east Texas, but I can’t remember what it is, and a quick search didn’t turn it up. Yours is pretty, nonetheless.

    You might take a look at the Pearl Crescent as an ID for your butterfly. When I first saw it, that’s what I assumed it was. This photo of the Spangled Fritillary shows the large blacks dots that range across all of its wings. They sure are similar!
